CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Contrary to rumors that have been circulating since last year, non-regular employees of the city government in Cagayan de Oro were not laid off en masse but that their contracts have expired on Dec. 31, 2022.
This was the clarification made by Mayor Rolando Uy during the flag-raising ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Uy’s statement came in the wake of reports that he has ordered the mass layoff of city hall’s job order (JO) and casual workers.
The mayor said it is not his style to dismiss non-regular employees as he understands they have families to take care of, especially those who have children in school.
Uy made it clear that the JO and casual employees’ contracts have already expired Dec. 31, and that they need to have their contracts renewed by the mayor’s office so they can get back to work.
“They (JO and casual workers) are aware that their contract is only until December 31,” Uy told the city hall employees, adding that their renewal will be subject to evaluation and recommendation by the department managers.
Uy has also clarified that he has granted “temporary exemption” to JO and casual workers who are assigned in offices that provide vital services including medical, health, disaster response, peace and order, traffic management, sanitation, engineering, public cemetery, among others.
Some of these units are the City Health Office, City Health Insurance Office, JR Borja General Hospital, Roads and Traffic Administration, Civil Security Unit, City Isolation Unit, City Social Welfare and Development, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Public Services Office, City Engineers Office, and the Mayor’s Office.
Included in the “temporary exemption” are the Business Process Licensing Division and the Office of the Building Official due to the annual business permit renewal. (IAF | CIO)
