CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The newly-created City College of Cagayan de Oro is eyeing for an admission of 400 students in its maiden academic year, the number of enrolees that is required by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) for accreditation of a local government-owned institution of higher learning.
City College Interim President Jestoni Babia, in a Meet the Press forum at SM Downtown Premier on Wednesday, June 26, said the CHEd requirement was the one of the reasons for setting the 400 enrolment target, but hinted there would be room for flexibility once actual numbers are in.
Babia said the City College of CdeO’s initial course offerings include Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTE), Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLE), and Bachelor of Arts in Communication (BACo). Of the 400, 200 slots are for BACo and 100 each for NTVTE and BTLE.
These, he said, are distinct academic course of studies to those currently offered by other educational institutions in Cagayan de Oro. For instance, Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (DevCom) is offered at Xavier University while Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication is at Pilgrim Christian College.
He said that although City College of CdeO sources its resources from the Local Education Fund, it is envisisoned as a self-sustaining Local Economic Enteprise of the City Government of Cagayan de Oro. And it welcomes enrolees outside Cagayan de Oro as long as they pass the City College Admission Test (CCAT).
The first CCAT was held on June 18, 2024 at Agusan (National High School) Annex Campus which will serve as temporary campus of the City College of CdeO while groundworks and building constructions are underway in Barangay Dansolihon which is about 24 kilometers west from the City Hall.
The City College of CdeO is the third local government-owned and managed institution of higher learning in Northern Mindanao region, the other two being the Governor Alfonso D. Tan College in Misamis Occidental that started in 1984 and the Tagoloan Community College in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental that opened its campus in 2003.
Established in 2023 pursuant to City Ordinance No. 14564, the City College of CdeO is managed by a Governing Board whose membership includes representatives from the regional offices of the CHEd and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Babia said that ensure City College of CdeO students are given quality education, teaching positions include Professor 1, Associate Professors, Instructor 2, Instructor 3, and Instructor 4 items; half of the entire teaching force has doctoral degrees and the other half are holders of masters degree—all with decades of classroom teaching experience.
