CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – An epidemiologist from the health office of Cagayan de Oro disclosed the whereabouts and primary contacts of five persons tagged as cases of Covid-19 delta variant in the city.
Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya of the City Health Office, in a Covid-19 briefer at city hall, said the infections were traced to a birthday celebration in barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro on June 18.
Retuya said the 39-year-old man who marked his birthday is the “common index case” of the five Covid-19 delta variant cases, though the “non-city resident” had tested negative for the virulent mutant virus of Covid-19.
The head of the family used to spend most of his time in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, though his family has been renting a residential space in Carmen because his wife used to be a health worker in the city.
Nonetheless, the specimens from his 37-year0old wife, 14-year-old son, 62-year-old mother-in-law, and 61-year-old aunt all were found positive for the more infectious delta variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2).
All four, including a five-year-old son, tested positive for Covid-19 earlier.
The five-year-old was negative for delta variant while his 12-year-old sister yielded negative result for Covid-19.
Their mother’s co-worker, also a close contact, was also swabbed and still awaiting test result.
Retuya said that aside from the four family members, a 32-year-old male hospital worker who attended to dietary needs of family members during their admissions, was found positive on June 25 for Covid-19, though fully vaccinated.
Said medical worker has been tagged as the fifth case of Covid-19 delta variant.
Of the four hospital worker’s family contacts, his four-year-old son and one-month-old daughter have tested positive for Covid-19. His wife and six-year-old son yielded negative test results.
His five primary workplace contacts have also been assessed and swabbed on Saturday, July 17, awaiting results as of press time.
As of July 16, all family members from barangay Carmen, including the common index case and four Covid-19 delta variant cases, have been sheltered in an isolation facility of the Department of Health-10.
All have been re-swabbed on Saturday, July 17, and their specimens sent for further genome sequencing.
This, even when all of them have been asymptomatic and certified recovered before the Philippine Genome Center reported on Thursday, July 15, their infections of Covid-19 delta variant.
The five are among the 16 cases across the country announced that day.
