First temporary home, learning center for street families in PH inaugurated

MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon – Street children and street families will soon have their temporary shelter and learning center in Northern Mindanao here, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 (DSWD-10) said.

This after DSWD-10 inaugurates today the “Bahay Silungan,” the first and only temporary home and learning center in the country that caters to the needs of street children and street families where they will receive social services from DSWD towards their recovery and reintegration to society.

The “Bahay Silungan” can accommodate more than five families and 60 street children which has facilities like family rooms, dormitories, kitchen, counseling area, clinic, activity area and other recreational amenities.

Mari-Flor Dollaga, DSWD-10 regional director, said the establishment of the residential care remains the primary response of the agency to child abandonment, neglect, and abuse.

Dollaga said the “Bahay Silungan” here will be the place of safety for emergency care and transit center in emergency situations for families in need of special protection, like the street dwellers.

Before the inauguration, Dollaga and other DSWD-10 officials met with representatives from the DOH, TESDA, LGU Manolo, engineers and bidders, and the Office of Rep. Maria Lourdes Acosta-Alba from the 1st District Bukidnon to solicit support and commitment from the stakeholders during the Donor’s Forum for its operation soon.

Undersecretary Luzviminda Ilagan, representing Secretary Rolando Joselito Bautista, led the inauguration ceremony of the “Bahay Silungan,” along with some regional directors from the different regions in the country.

Ilgan enjoined every stakeholder to help DSWD in giving a better quality of life to the homeless through their support to “Bahay Silungan.”

Representative of Bukidnon Gov. Jose Maria Zubiri of Bukidnon and also a representative of Mayor Clive Quino of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon also graced the activity. (DSWD-10)
