CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Improper waste disposal, security and congestion caused by parking of vehicles along the roadside were only some of the problems identified during Tuesday afternoon’s vendors meeting at the mayor’s office.
Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) chief Engr. Nonito Oclarit along with officials of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) and City Economic Enterprises Department (CEED) raised these concerns to Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, who wanted to finalize the relocation of over 1,000 ambulant vendors at the Cogon market area by next week.
During the meeting, Oclarit said traffic congestion occurs when vendors, particularly street food vendors, allow their customers to park alongside their location.
“In the proposed new location (for them), they should advise their customers to park nearby and walk directly to them rather than park their vehicles in front of them,” Oclarit said in Visayan to Mayor Klarex and officials in attendance.
Later officials of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) also informed Mayor Klarex that while they have teams on standby to clean up the garbage left by ambulant vendors, it’s important that the vendors clean up and collect their own trash for disposal.
The CEED profiled over 1,000 vendors from Nov. 9 to Nov. 14 in preparation for their relocation.
CLENRO officials said some street food vendors don’t dispose of their garbage properly especially late at night.
Among the regulations mandated on ambulant vendors was for them to collect their own garbage for disposal.
The set of guidelines for ambulant vendors is being finalized sometime this week in anticipation of next week’s relocation.
Regulatory Compliance Board (RCB) chairman Atty. Jose Edgardo Uy, who’s drafting the guidelines with the City Legal Office, said a briefing should be done with the ambulant vendors in tandem with a “dry run” that would enable them to identify and resolve any problems that may arise from the relocation of the ambulant vendors.
