CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Brothers Jaris Bernaldez and Miguel Bernaldez starred for Xavier University to defeat Corpus Christi School 2-0 and capture the gold medal in the boys football event in the Cagayan de Oro City Division meet held at the barangay Agusan field.
Corpus Christi’s elementary boys football team were better than their older counterparts as they trounced Rosevale School 3-1, to capture the boys elementary football gold.
It has been good year for coach Dhon Lazo’s boys as the XU booters earned the berth to represent the city in the regionals for a long time now. Corpus Christi, and Rosevale School have dominated this competition for many years until now.
They will represent Cagayan de Oro City at the Northern Mindanao Region athletic Association (NMRAA) regional meet in April.
The XU Junior Crusaders had an easy way advancing the championship against Corpus HS beating Bulua National High School 6-1, in the semis.
Once again the Bernaldez brothers led the Junior Crusaders with Jaris scoring two goals and Miguel adding one. Kurt Bernabe also found the back of the net twice while Tyler Cabading completed the charge with one goal.
Corpus Junior Knights had to scrape a semis win surviving a penalty shootout against Abba’s Orchard Montessori School to advance to the championship.
The Corpus Christi Little Knights in contrast were dominant from the start recording six wins including a 3-1, win over Rosevale in the championship and beating Abba’s Orchard Montessori School 6-0, in the semis.
Prolific striker Francis Sanico scored two goals and Xylem Maagad completed their win blasting one goal to insure their golden finish.
The Little Knights rolled over their opponents in the elimination round beating Abba’s 17-0, in their first assignment, with Xylem Maagad, Zion Maagad, Eddie Danial, and Francis Sanico scoring the goals.
They then downed Rosevale School 3-0, in the second game with Xylem Maagad leading the charge with three goals. They then beat Bulua Elementary School 6-0 in their third game with Xylem Maagad, Sanico, and Eddie Dangcal scoring the goals once again.
The Little Knights then completed their sweep of the elims with an another 9-0, lopsided win over International School.
